Rival Arts
How many art galleries are there in New York City? While there’s no official figure, estimates range from 500 to 1500 venues, displaying and selling everything from antiquities to the latest thing. And while there’s no exact numerical breakdown for contemporary art shows specifically, they, too, range in the hundreds, making New York City the single greatest concentration of galleries on the planet. For art lovers, this provides a literal cornucopia of stuff to look at—and all of it for free. Gallery shows are open to the public and often rival the quality of exhibits at art museums charging you $20 and up to get in. All it takes is a little walking, so to point you in the right direction we offer this guide of the city’s best galleries.

This may be my second Daredevil book of this month but it's exactly the tone of narrative and kinds of storyline that strongly appeal to me. Writer Brian Michael Bendis and I have an enjoyable relationship so far in comics. I often do get invested in his X-Men titles particularly the first twenty-nine issues of All-New X-Men and his entire The Uncanny X-Men run, as well as that groundbreaking piece House of M. I only read Frank Miller's work before this one so I don't have anything else to compa...more

This book made me a Daredevil fan.
A friend of mine recommended this book to me since my only experience with Daredevil is the terrible movie with Ben Affleck:
And I want to be ready for how (hopefully) awesome this is gonna be:
To be honest, before this book Daredevil just never seemed all that interesting to me. A blind dude with superpowers fighting crime? I mean, good for him but why should I give a shit?

On the heels of dealing with this PR disaster, Matt takes a case defending The White Panther, recently accused of murder.

So far this has been my favourite read in the graphic novel world. It may also be up there as one of favourite reads of all time. Loved this alot. Daredevil has his issues, someone wants him dead, someone wants to expose him. Theres also issues with Fisk. Others pop up and trt to control the situation. Perfect story telling, amazing artwork. The combination of these artists have created an amazing novel. Cannot wait to continue the second volume or book 2.

While attending Comic Con I saw a panel where Jim Lee made a joke about all the people who primarily focus on the artwork, only occasionally glancing at the bubbles to make sure they get the general premise of where it's going. This is probably why the same five or so people seem to win all the Eisner awards for writing every year. I try so many comics from the major studios, and at times the perfunctory, bland dialogue almost harkens back to the stories of Marvel artists leaving bubbles blank s...more
As the Netflix television series is closely approaching, I have started on reading the Brian Michael Bendis run on Daredevil of which many would consider it as a fine rival to Frank Miller’s groundbreaking run during the eighties. During the first ultimate collection book, there are three distinct stories by Bendis, each of which are drawn by artists with their own distinct style.

Aaaahhhh Daredevil, you are so cool.
I'm not going to go into detail about this book, because words escape me when trying to describe how awesome it is.
So instead of reviewing it for a potential buying, I will instead give a few words of advice:
Buy it.

I used to think I disliked Bendis; turns out I was just reading the wrong Bendis books. My response to his big-time superhero books ranges from indifference (Ultimate Spider-man) to annoyance (his recent X-Men runs, any of the eleventy billion Marvel Events he's written), but his more street-level hero comics (Alias is great too) are among the best stuff Marvel's released this century. Not everything here works - the 'Wake Up' story arc has some laughably overwritten narration, and the court roo...more

Okay, so I have since finished Frank Miller's incredible run on this Daredevil and I don't think I have heard ONE negative review or opinion on this book. Not one. So I ordered the first volume and breezed through it in a day. Becuase this book is IMPOSSIBLE to put down. Meaning it's amazing. I truly loved the experience of reading about Matt Murdock once again getting put through the wringer. But this story is much darker and grizzly than Born Again. Daredevil by Bendis and Maleev is one of those comics you alway hear about. And I’ve heard a lot about it. Daredevil at times is frankly under appreciated, he’s got so many good runs and his title has been consistently good since 98. He went from Smith to Mack to Bendis to Brubaker to Waid to Soule and is currently being written by Zdarsky. Guy is stacked with good talent.

I've read these before, I actually own most of the single issues and I was thinking of rereading them, but just getting this book seemed much easier.
This run was my first introduction to Daredevil, so in my mind this is what Daredevil is. Two words for this: Best. Comic. Ever.
Wait... one... two... dammit. That was three words. Oh well, too late to go back and fix it now so I'm moving on.
I was pretty blown away by the Netflix show, I got the Mark Waid book and all that because my DD knowledge was a bit lacking. It was fine, I enjoyed it and all that. But this. Wow! Oh, THAT'S why everyone talks about Bendis on Daredevil. Great stuff... better than even a lot of the Miller Daredevil I've read, to be honest. Looking forward to reading more.
David Mack's artwork is next-level, so impressive. All stars.
I like Daredevil.
In many ways, he’s Marvels Batman. But where Batman is a rich dude ultimate wish fulfillment character, daredevil is a more grounded street level character who has to struggle for everything he does.
This isn’t to disparage Batman; he has some of the best and most iconic stories and characters in the medium. But Daredevil hits a lot of beats in ways Batman cannot.

I know Bendis has his detractors out there. Yes, he's the king of the multiple babbling word balloons.
But he's also a masterful plotter, and while his characters are a little more verbose than most, what they're saying is funny, real, and vital to the understanding of the characters.
I read this massive collection in mostly one setting, and when I finished it and thought about it, I realized that I was completely invested in the world of Matt Murdock/Daredevil. By that, I mean these characters ha...more

It's very rare that a book this large keeps me interested (5 stars worth of interested) throughout its entirety. However, this one managed to do just that. Every issue jammed in here had the full package. Art was beautiful, story was grabbing, and there was enough action and drama to keep the wheels turning.
This big book can definitely be intimidating, but I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Daredevil, Marvel, or comic books in general.

I'd heard good things about Bendis' Daredevil run. Actually, I'd heard great things about it, meaning my expectations were pretty big. Bendis' first issue was #16, so I figured I might as well start with #1, since it wouldn't take me that long to get there. That turned out to be a mistake, because while the first couple of issues were ok, and fun, they didn't exactly impress me. And it looked like those issues were rated about as high as the Bendis ones.

Upon re-read, I still stand by everything I said in my previous review of this Daredevil volume. Matt Murdock's existence as both a lawyer and vigilante will always be so rich with possibilities for both stories and philosophising. I really enjoyed what Bendis did here with the story and philosophising and I'm excited to finally continue the series.

This volume collects too much content for me to fairly give it five-stars across the board, but it more than lives up to the rich pedigree of Daredevil's comic book history. It's easy to see why the Bendis/Maleev run is so influential, with great dialogue, smart law scenes, and a street-smart, mature aesthetic, that has helped to define the entire Daredevil world. The story is told in a-chronological Tarantino-esque chunks, first detailing the apparent death of Kingpin, leading into the start of...more

My favorite comic of all time, and the comic that made Daredevil my favorite superhero. What impresses most is how deftly Bendis handles character, and the balance of the inherent darkness of the story (and the darkness that has been a staple of the comic since Frank Miller) and the simple goodness of the character Matt Murdock as he struggles to deal with the reveal of his secret identity (again.)

Oooooof. I bought this as a gift for my partner because of their love for Daredevil and just got around to reading it myself. Other than the Netflix series, it's my first exposure to the character. I really enjoyed these arcs, though they were painful to read for a number of reasons. I'm eager to read more Daredevil comics.
